Ai-Ai delas Alas’ Contract Signing

The long wait is over. Philippine Comedy Queen Ai-Ai delas Alas returns to her home network as she signed an exclusive contract with GMA Network today, April 16.

Present during the contract signing were GMA Chairman and CEO Atty. Felipe L. Gozon; GMA President and COO Gilberto R. Duavit,  Jr.; GMA Entertainment TV’s Senior Vice President Lilybeth G. Rasonable; GMA Vice President for Entertainment TV Marivin T. Arayata; GMA Vice President for Drama Productions Redgie Acuña-Magno; and GMA Vice President for Corporate Communications Angela Javier Cruz.

Ai-Ai started her showbiz career in GMA 7 as one of the hosts of the noontime shows, Lunch Date and Salo-Salo Together. She became even more popular as Cheenie La Chika in her show, R.S.V.P.

And after 14 years, she is back in her home network. “I have returned… Ngayon po ay babalik na ako sa totoo kong bahay…Ang GMA, hindi ako kinalimutan…Maraming maraming salamat po sa mainit ninyong pagtanggap sa akin,” says Ai-Ai.

The multitalented actress/comedienne/TV host became emotional when the network executives delivered their welcome remarks.

Atty. Gozon not only expressed his excitement on Ai-Ai’s homecoming, but he also admitted that she is one of his favorite TV personalities, “Masaya akong nagbalik si Ai-Ai sa kanyang pinanggalingan. Hindi ko nakakalimutang Kapuso natin si Ai-Ai. Medyo nagbakasyon lang siya at nagpunta sa ibang istasyon. Pero higit sa lahat, kaya ako natutuwa, hindi lamang magaling na comedienne si Ai-Ai, magaling na artista at saka talagang professional, well, sasabihin ko na rin, si Ai-Ai ay paborito kong personal.”

Mr. Duavit, in turn, revealed that the whole Kapuso Network family is very excited with her comeback, “Noong ako ay paakyat sa elevator at nagmamadali, tinanong sa akin kung sa 17th Floor ako pupunta, may balita raw na may signing. Noong nalaman na si Ai-Ai ay darating para i-formalize ang kanyang pagbalik, ay nagpalakpakan sa elevator. Talagang lahat ng mga Kapuso, natutuwa. Ai-Ai, kaming lahat ay bukod sa nagagalak, ay nasisiyahan sa iyong pagbalik and we look forward with great anticipation to working with you again. You make us all proud to be a Kapuso.”

Meanwhile, Rasonable said that she is grateful to Ai-Ai for trusting GMA and she hopes for more productive years with her as a Kapuso, “Galak na galak kami na ngayong nagbalik siya kung saan siya nagsimula.  Si Cheenie La Chicka, tandang-tanda ko ang character niya na hanggang ngayon ay memorable pa rin sa atin na nagtrabaho din sa GMA and we are very very excited and looking forward na hindi ka lang maging ka-trabaho, kundi maging masaya ang pagsasama natin in the next years.”

Aside from the other shows being lined up for Ai-Ai, her initial project in GMA is the upcoming primetime series Let the Love Begin which is slated to air this May./

This May, GMA Network presents the groundbreaking drama series, The Rich Man’s Daughter.

Mike Tan is Paul Tanchingco, Jade’s older brother. He is a quiet and private person. He is also protective of Jade. Paul is a discreet gay.

Chynna Ortaleza is Batchi Luna, also a proud lesbian – a butch. She acts and dresses up like a man.

Sheena Halili as Sally Lim-Apolinario, Jade’s kikay and dependable bestfriend.

She is secretly jealous of her in-laws’ attention for Jade.  Paolo Contis as Anton Maceda, a guy who comes from an old rich family. He will become Jade’s fake suitor/boyfriend since he is just after the riches of the Tanchingcos; TJ Trinidad as Gabriel Tanchingco, the eldest son of Oscar and Amanda, the brother of Paul and Jade. He is being groomed and trained to lead their businesses. Gabriel will do anything for the family; Charee Pineda as Angeline San Jose, Gabriel’s real love. Gabriel left her for Pearl but she remains in love with him; Stephanie Sol as Abby Luna, Batchi’s femme live-in partner.

Completing the star-studded cast are respected TV and movie actors and actresses: Al Tantay as Oscar Tanchingco, the father of Gabriel, Paul and Jade.  He is the CEO and president of their family businesses. He treats Jade like a princess; Glydel Mercado as Amanda Tanchingco, the wife of Oscar. Oscar’s family didn’t approve of their relationship but when she gave birth to Jade, she is finally accepted and is treated as part of the family and she will do anything to keep it that way; Tony Mabesa as Angkong/John Tanchingco, the patriarch of the family. Kapuso teen star Andre Paras may have been a household name because of the phenomenal ratings success of The Half Sisters but he still gets starstruck by other celebrities. Andre revealed that he got overwhelmed meeting the Philippine Comedy Queen Aiai delas Alas for the first time.

This happened during the taping for the special “crossover” of the character of Andre as Bradley in the The Half Sisters and the character of Aiai as DJ Jeni in the primetime series Let the Love Begin.

“I wanted to say “how I are you, I can’t wait to work with you (Aiai).” Pero, the thing that came out to my mouth is “Hi.” Na-strastruck po ako. I can say na I’m honored to be working with her po,” Andre said in an interview.

Kapuso viewers will witness this exciting “crossover” of Bradley as he visits the radio show of DJ Jeni to declare his love for Diana played by Barbie Forteza. Along with Buboy Villar as Marlon, Bradley seeks for Diana’s forgiveness and asks her to give him a second chance.

Aiai, on the other hand, expressed her excitement for this special episode of the two shows, “Ang cute nga eh kasi ngayon ko lang na-experience na may crossover yung mga shows.”

GMA Network continued to dominate the ratings in its stronghold areas of Urban Luzon and Mega Manila in May, according to data from the industry’s widely-trusted ratings service provider Nielsen TV Audience Measurement.

Urban Luzon and Mega Manila, represent 77 and 59 percent, respectively, of all urban TV households in the country.

During the covered period (with the dates of May 24 to 31 based on overnight data), GMA led competition in Urban Luzon with a 37.6 percent total day household audience share, ahead of ABS-CBN’s 31.3 percent by 6.3 points and TV5’s 8.2 percent by 29.4 points.

In Mega Manila, GMA led across all dayparts with 39.4 percent, besting ABS-CBN’s 27.6 percent by 11.8 points and TV5’s 8.4 percent by 31 points.

Meanwhile, GMA kept its lead in the daytime blocks in NUTAM (National Urban Television Audience Measurement). In the morning block, GMA recorded an average household share of 34 percent, ahead of ABS-CBN’s 29.9 percent by 4.1 points and TV5’s 10.1 percent by 23.9 points. In the afternoon block, GMA posted 36.7 percent, up 3.3 points from ABS-CBN’s 33.4 percent and up 28.2 points from TV5’s 8.5 percent.

Majority of the programs that entered the list of top-rating shows in NUTAM, Urban Luzon and Mega Manila came from GMA.

GMA’s telecast of the highly anticipated face-off between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, Jr., which was simulcast via the three networks, rated highest nationwide (NUTAM) at 47.4 percent versus ABS-CBN’s 31.5 percent and TV5’s 7 percent. The fight dubbed “Battle for Greatness: Pacquiao vs. Mayweather” was also the highest-rating Kapuso program in NUTAM and Urban Luzon.

Other Kapuso programs that figured prominently in the lists include Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho, Magpakailanman, Once Upon A Kiss, Pepito Manaloto and The Half Sisters.

With the help of the GMA Kapuso Foundation’s donors and partners, this landmark undertaking, which includes 403 permanent concrete houses, was officially completed on May 21

GMA Kapuso Foundation (GMAKF) recently marked another milestone achievement with the completion of its 403-unit housing project in Tacloban, Leyte.

The Kapuso Village in Tacloban is the first permanent concrete housing project in the area for survivors of typhoon Yolanda.

With the help of its donors and partners, GMAKF continues to reach out to the survivors and other affected people surrounding the area of Tacloban.

Along with the housing project, GMAKF is planning to build 24 new classrooms under its Kapuso School Development project within the Kapuso Village in Tacloban. A Kapuso Village will also soon rise in Palo with 169 more concrete houses to further accommodate the survivors.

GMAKF EVP and COO Mel C. Tiangco recalls all the hardwork and expresses her gratitude for those who made the project possible. “Besides financial assistance, some donors gave us construction materials or appliances, while some gave us really good discounts,” shares Tiangco. “Needless to say, we are grateful for the trust and generosity bestowed to us by numerous citizens all over the world.”

GMAKF also requested the local government to provide an additional 2,000 square meter space for an office for the homeowners association, function hall and a multi-purpose center, where residents can set up sari-sari stores and other establishments they deem wise, to further make the area a barangay.

Meanwhile, GMAKF recently formed a group of volunteers under the guidance of the Department of Community Development of the College of Social Work and Community Development in UP Diliman to help and guide the beneficiaries of the Kapuso Village in terms of having a sense of community and building camaraderie.

There are currently 403 families or more than 3,000 individuals, who were left homeless by the super typhoon, who are now residing in the Kapuso Village in Tacloban.

Indeed, GMAKF gives these survivors a new hope, and a new story to tell.

Kapuso leading man Tom Rodriguez is more than ready to thrill viewers as he plays the role of Sergio in GMA’s upcoming primetime series Mari Mar.

“I was very surprised, very honored and excited, it felt so unreal. I knew right away when I first heard about it that it was going to be a big project. Nakaka-pressure pero at the same time I’m very excited ‘cause I know I’m going to learn a lot on this project,” shares the Kapuso actor in an interview during the story conference of Mari Mar.

Making Tom more delighted about the project is the opportunity to work with Miss World 2013 Megan Young, “I really feel blessed. Mas nakakabawas ng kaba at takot kasi I’ve worked with her before. At least we already have a great working relationship.”

Aside from Megan, Tom is likewise excited to collaborate again with director Dominic Zapata whom he first worked with in My Husband’s Lover.

“Kinilig ako, siyempre. It’s a big project,” reveals Kapuso actress Megan Young when asked about her reaction upon learning that she’s going to breathe new life to the well-loved character of Mari Mar.

Despite feeling nervous, the Kapuso actress doesn’t let the nerves get to her and instead feels excited as she prepares for the role, “Acting wise, nagwo-workshop na kami nila Tom [Rodriguez] and Lauren [Young]. May dance and diving lessons din para siyempre mas magawa natin ng tama. Excited lang talaga ako, sine-set aside ko na lang ang kaba.”

Megan also admitted that she can relate to the character of Mari Mar. In an interview, Megan recalls her experience before she was hailed as Miss World 2013, “Si Mari Mar kasi she’s like any other Pinay who strive for the best.”

“Isa siyang hardworker, gagawin niya ang lahat para makuha ang mga pangarap niya. Ganoon din ako, kahit sinabi ng iba dati na baka matalo ako sa pageant… I put that aside kasi ito ang gusto ko. Manalo, matalo at least nagawako. Si Mari Mar ganoon din na kahit mag-fail siya, in the end she’ll make sure na ‘yung failure na ‘yun ay magiging encouragement sa kanya to strive for the better,” Megan says.

Ai-Ai is confident that the on-screen pair will make it big in the showbiz industry and until that time comes, she only has one piece of advice for them.

“Ang wish ko sa kanila na kapag dumating ‘yung panahon na sikat na sikat na sila, is to always be humble and thankful. The more na sumikat sila, the more na maging humble pa sila and magpasalamat sa lahat ng meron sila,” she said in an interview.

Ai-Ai revealed that Gabbi and Ruru are undeniably close to each other—be it on or off camera.

In a separate dialogue, Ruru admitted taking Gabbi once for a ride to work via his newly-purchased car which he considers as one of his biggest investments. “Opo, pinag-drive ko na po siya [Gabbi] papunta sa taping niya ng Mars,” he said. For her part, Gabbi couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed by Ruru’s sweet gesture.

Ai-Ai has nothing but praises for the two young stars and said, “Si Ruru [ay] napakahusay na bata at malayo ang mararating niya sa showbiz. Si Gabbi, ganun din at napakagandang bata,” she shared.

Meanwhile, the veteran actress also shared that she feels completely satisfied with the way her career is going. Apart from her present primetime soap, she mentioned that she will be having other TV shows on GMA this year, launching a magazine next month, and producing a fund-raising concert come September.

As she marks her 25th year in the industry this year, A-Ai held a concert dubbed Ai Am Who Ai Am earlier this year. Her concert featured performances of fellow Kapuso artists including Ruru and Gabbi. Catch it this Sunday on GMA’s flagship international channel, GMA Pinoy TV.

“No. As of now, ‘yun pa rin naman ‘yung plano namin ni Drew na next year pa (magkaka-baby),” said Kapuso star Iya Villania during a recent press interview.

“At saka, I mean, hindi naman talaga halata ‘yung belly ng mom kapag four to five months ‘di ba? Feeling ko I’ll be able to get away with it for a while pa. Kapag hindi na akosuma-side view, alam na! Pero next year pa naman. That’s the plan,” she added.

These are busy days for Iya. She will now have to juggle her time between taping for GMA News TV’s Taste Buddies, doing production numbers on weekend variety show Sunday All Stars, and hosting 24 Oras’ showbiz segment Chika Minute.

“Gusto kong isipin na parang guest pa lang ako kasi ayaw ko ‘yung kaba, ayaw ko ‘yung pressure,” shared Iya, who officially replaced Pia Guanio as Chika Minute host last June 15.

Iya said she feels glad that GMA News chose her and embraced her quirkiness. “Gusto kong umiyak. Nakakakilig, nakakatuwa. I mean, it really is a pleasant surprise. I wouldn’t say na I was deserving, for me, it’s really God’s will. If it’s not for you, then it’s not for you. If it’s for you, mapupunta ‘yan sa iyo. So kung hindi napunta sa akin, I would have been okay rin naman,” she shared.

Though it’s admittedly a challenge for Iya to speak fluently in Filipino, she promised she would give it her best shot to properly deliver the news. “They (viewers) will get to see me try my best sa wikang Filipino. Yes, sa Filipino talaga. But I never give up and I always put everything that I can into whatever it is that I do, so I will definitely do my best na i-deliver ng tama ‘yung news,” she explained.

Being the bubbly person that she is, Iya considers toning down her energy as the biggest challenge of all. “Depende sa level na required sa akin. Of course, it would also depend din sa news. Kasi kung medyo sad ‘yung news, hindi naman pwede. So maga-adjust naman ako. I will be appropriate,” she said.

GMA Network kept its winning streak in the viewer-rich areas of Urban Luzon and Mega Manila in June, according to data from the industry’s widely trusted ratings service provider Nielsen TV Audience Measurement.

Urban Luzon and Mega Manila, represent 77 and 59 percent, respectively, of all urban TV households in the country.

During the covered period (with the dates of June 21 to 30 based on overnight data), GMA continued to dominate the ratings in Urban Luzon as it registered a 35.3 percent total day household audience share, beating ABS-CBN’s 33.5 percent by 1.8 points and TV5’s 8.1 percent by 27.2 points.

The trend continued in Mega Manila, where in GMA registered 37.1 percent, ahead of ABS-CBN’s 29.8 percent by 7.3 points and of TV5’s 8.7 percent by 28.4 points. GMA was ahead of competition across all dayparts in Mega Manila.

In NUTAM (National Urban Television Audience Measurement) ratings, GMA maintained its lead in the afternoon block with 35.6 percent versus ABS-CBN’s 34.1 percent and TV5’s 7.8 percent.

Compared to its closest rival, more programs from GMA occupied the list of top programs in Urban Luzon and Mega Manila (without specials) with Magpakailanman leading the roster of Kapuso shows in both areas. The weekly drama anthology hosted by Mel Tiangco was also highest-rating Kapuso program in NUTAM in June.

Aside from Magpakailanman, other GMA programs that registered high ratings for the month were Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho, Pepito Manaloto, Kapuso Movie Festival, Pari ‘Koy, The Half Sisters, Celebrity Bluff, 24 Oras, Ismol Family, Eat Bulaga, and Let the Love Begin. 

GMA likewise continued to add to its string of awards as it bagged top honors from various local and international award-giving bodies such as the 2015 US International Film and Video Festival, AIBD World TV Awards, PANAta Marketing Effectiveness Awards, Asia-Pacific Tambuli Awards, 38th Gawad Urian, PEP List Year 2, and most recently the Reader’s Digest Trusted Brand Awards.

Following the success of Kapusong Pinoy concerts in Vancouver and Anaheim recently, GMA International continues to ignite the Filipino spirit around the world through its participation in various events celebrating the Philippines’ 117^th Independence Day this June.

“It has been ten fruitful years of bringing Filipinos abroad closer to home through our flagship international channel GMA Pinoy TV and we look forward to many more years of serving our kababayans abroad,” expresses GMA Vice President and Head of International Operations Joseph T. Francia. “We will continue to instill and nurture a sense of pride and love for country among our fellow Filipinos abroad through our programs on GMA Pinoy TV, GMA Life TV and GMA News TV-International and on-ground events,” he adds.

The series of patriotic events opened with the Philippine Independence Day celebration in Carson City, California on June 6, graced by one of GMA’s top leading men Alden Richards. The event was organized by the Philippine Independence Day Foundation (PIDF, Inc.) of Carson in cooperation with the Cities of Carson and Los Angeles.

Alden, who was also one of the featured artists in the recent Kapusong Pinoy events in North America, once again charmed the audience and was presented three certificates of recognition by the Mayor Pro Tem and Grand Marshall Elito Santarino.

Simultaneously, Pagdiriwang 2015 spearheaded by the Filipino Cultural Heritage Society of Washington (FCHSW) was held in Seattle, Washington on June 6 and 7. Alden also joined the celebration and interacted with our kababayans during the meet-and-greet session on the second day.

“Sa lahat po ng mga Kapuso nating nakisaya sa Carson at Seattle, thank you very much from the bottom of my heart, and in line with the celebration of 10^thanniversary of GMA Pinoy TV, maraming, maraming salamat po, sana napaligaya namin kayo, and we hope to see all of you again next year! Meanwhile, Mabuhay Festival 2015 organized by the Mabuhay Foundation was held in San Diego, California on June 13. The event was a family affair and GMA Pinoy TV’s photo booth became a hit among them. Apart from the celebrations in the US, the Pinoy Fiesta and Trade Show in Toronto held its successful 5^th year anniversary celebration last June 27. And just like the past 4 years, thousands of Kapuso in Canada joined the celebration.

Kapuso actress Heart Evangelista graced the event, and received a warm welcome from the crowd who came despite heavy rains. “Miss na kayo ng Pinas mga kapuso! Maraming salamat! Sana po nag enjoy kayo. Sa uulitin,” posted Heart on her Instagram account.

Organized by the Philippine Canadian Charitable Foundation (PCCF), the event was attended by thousands of event-goers including dignitaries – ministers, senators and members of Parliament, Philippine Ambassador to Canada Petronila P. Garcia, and Toronto Mayor John Tory.

From North America to the Middle East

Aside from the festivities in North America, GMA International also participated in celebrations in UAE and Kuwait.

On June 12, dance diva Rochelle Pangilinan and Survivor Philippines: Celebrity Doubles Showdown Winner Betong Sumaya joined the celebrations in Dubai, UAE organized by the Philippine Independence Day Organizing Committee led by the Office of the Philippine Consulate General. The event was jam-packed with 4,000 of our kababayans, who enjoyed performances by Rochelle, Betong and our very talented Dubai-based Filipino artists. The GMA Pinoy TV booth also stood out as games like Pinoy Henyo, Dice, and GPTV Q&A’s drew in crowds of Kapuso fans.

After the show, Rochelle got a chance to meet one of her Dubai-based fans, Mrs. Rose Garreth, who was in tears upon meeting her idol. It was such a heart-warming moment which Rochelle was also able to share with her followers on Instagram. “Maishare ko lang po ang napakasayang karanasan, nung makita ko siya, naiyak siya nung makita ako, natulala ako sa kanya, nung niyakap ko siya, tuwang tuwa siya at ako naman ang naiyak. Ang nasabi ko na lang sa sarili [ko], thank you God sa talentong ibinigay mo, nakakapagpasaya pala ako ng tao katulad ni ate Rose!” she relates.

Betong, on the other hand recalls the “amazing” journey he had in Dubai. “Performing and seeing our kababayans in Dubai up close and personal is an experience I’ll never forget,” he says.

On the same day, another celebration in the UAE took place as Musika at Tawanan 5, mounted by the Alliance of Filipino Organizations in Kuwait (ALLFILL-OK) in cooperation with the Philippine Embassy, kicked off in Kuwait. Kapuso Premier actress Lovi Poe was present and performed song numbers much to the delight of the audience. She was able to visit the Philippine Consular and Overseas Labor Offices, gamely took pictures with our kababayans and even had impromptu performances. In one particular venue, our kababayans were in tears as Lovi sang “Habang May Buhay.”

“My trip to Kuwait was truly an eye-opening experience. I got to spend time with all of these wonderful people who are unfortunately going through a tough time.Sana lahat tayo ay ipagdasal sila dahil isa lang ang hangad nila ngayon – ang maka uwi na sila sa kanilang mga pamilya,” shares Lovi with her Instagram followers.

More Pinoy celebrations are underway

GMA International’s support of Pinoy fiestas abroad will continue throughout the year.

The 6^th Annual Tribute to the Philippines will be held the this month from July 17 to 19 at the Music Pier, Moorlyn Terrace, Ocean City, New Jersey, USA. This event will feature a trade fair where Philippine products, foods, services, and tourism information are sold and displayed.

Come August 1 and 2, the 10^th Annual Adobo Festival will be held at the Kennedy Park in Union City, California. This event is expected to draw in Filipino families at the Bay Area and participate in the much-awaited adobo cook-off contest, various activity booths and live entertainment.

A year has passed since the top-rating GMA afternoon series Yagit held its auditions for the new generation of actors to portray the iconic roles of the “batang yagit.”

Because of its timelessness, the viewers of the show have been undeniably hooked with its story since its pilot episode October last year.

They remain to be amazed by the portrayals of Kapuso child stars Chlaui Malayao, Jemwell Ventinilla, Judie Dela Cruz, and Zymic Jaramilla. GMA Network was once again bestowed the Gold Award in the TV Network category at the Reader’s Digest Trusted Brand Awards, adding to its long history of winning in the annual consumer survey spearheaded by Reader’s Digest. The awarding ceremony was held on June 30 in Ortigas.

GMA Chairman and CEO Atty. Felipe L. Gozon thanked the people who voted for GMA. “We thank Reader’s Digest and its readers for their continued trust throughout the years. Indeed, our commitment to deliver unbiased news and quality entertainment will continue to grow stronger,” Gozon said.

Aside from the gold seal of GMA Network, GMA News pillar and Peabody awardee Jessica Soho reached another milestone in her career as she was named Most Trusted News Presenter for the fifth consecutive year.

“Trust can easily be lost so we broadcasters and journalists should not take ourselves too seriously. It is always about the story and never about ourselves,” said the multi-awarded broadcast journalist in her speech during the awarding ceremony.

According to Ma Teresa L. Pacis, GMA Network’s Assistant Vice President for Corporate Affairs, “We really put the welfare of our televiewers on top of our list of priorities. Vic Sotto, one of the main hosts of the Philippines’ longest-running noon time variety show Eat Bulaga and lead star of the weekly sitcom Vampire Ang Daddy Ko, was named Most Trusted Entertainment Presenter, while Filipino World Boxing Champion and certified Kapuso Manny Pacquiao was Most Trusted Sports Personality.
