Blessed by the Pope Special

Twenty years after the last papal visit in Manila, Pope Francis blessed Filipinos with his presence, his wisdom, and his empowering and comforting words that renewed and strengthened the faith of approximately 80 million Catholics in the Philippines.

On Monday, January 26, GMA News and Public Affairs presents Blessed by the Pope, a one and a half hour special showing the highlights of Pope Francis’ historic visit – from his arrival at Villamor Air Base, to his meeting with families and the youth, to his touching trip to Leyte, to his momentous concluding mass in Luneta before record-breaking crowds, until his departure.

Presented by award-winning broadcast journalist Ms. Jessica Soho, Blessed by the Pope features special interviews with the pilot who flew Pope Francis to Tacloban, the chef who cooked for the Supreme Pontiff, as well as personal insights from various individuals who encountered the Pope.

Blessed by the Pope also reveals a special interview with one of the families of the Yolanda survivors who had lunch with the Pope in Leyte. The private lunch was attended by invited families who were survivors of super typhoon Yolanda and the Bohol earthquake.

Relive the Pope’s inspiring messages of hope, faith, love, mercy and compassion in Blessed by the Pope, a GMA News and Public Affairs Special, premiering this Monday, January 26 on GMA Pinoy TV, with a replay on January 31.

ANG PEOPLES POPE

ANG PEOPLES POPE

Pope Francis’ visit to the country has been a resounding success – providing an electrifying atmosphere in the five days that he was here and winning the hearts of Filipinos not only through his words and deeds but also because of his captivating smile and sincerity that communicate directly to the soul.

And just like in the past – during significant events that help shape the country’s history – more viewers nationwide trusted GMA Network as their primary source of news and information.

Pope Francis’ five-day apostolic and state visit to the Philippines, from January 15 to 19, is no exception as GMA-7 and GMA News TV’s joint special “Ang People’s Pope sa Pilipinas” emerged as the most watched coverage of the said Papal visit nationwide.

Based on household data from the industry’s widely-trusted ratings service provider Nielsen TV Audience Measurement, GMA-7’s “Ang People’s Pope sa Pilipinas” posted an average of 15% from January 15 to 19 (based on overnight ratings) in NUTAM (National Urban Television Audience Measurement). It led ABS-CBN’s11.7% by 3.3 rating points.

The Kapuso Network’s special coverage, which was bannered by GMA News pillars Mel Tiangco, Mike Enriquez, Vicky Morales, Arnold Clavio, Howie Severino and Jessica Soho, together with the full roster of GMA News and Public Affairs, registered even bigger leads in the viewer-rich areas of Urban Luzon and Mega Manila.

In Urban Luzon, which comprises 77% of the total urban TV households nationwide, “Ang People’s Pope sa Pilipinas” got 16.9%, very much ahead of ABS-CBN’s 10.4%. Likewise in Mega Manila, which accounts for 59% of all urban TV households in the country, the Kapuso special coverage was the most watched with18.2% versus ABS-CBN’s 9.2%.

“Ang People’s Pope sa Pilipinas” special coverage started with the arrival of Pope Francis on Thursday afternoon, followed by the Pope’s activities on Friday that included the state visit to Malacañan Palace, a Eucharistic celebration at the Manila Cathedral, and a special meeting with families at the Mall of Asia Arena.

On Saturday, various GMA News teams covered Pope Francis’ visit to Leyte, which was shortened due to typhoon Amang. Highlights of his Leyte visit included the Pope’s heart-touching impromptu homily at the Holy Mass held at the Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport in Tacloban.

And on Sunday, “Ang People’s Pope sa Pilipinas” continued its coverage of the historic visit as Pope Francis headed a youth gathering at the University of Santo Tomas and led the record-breaking Mass celebration at the Quirino Grandstand in Luneta, which was attended by approximately six million people.

“Ang People’s Pope sa Pilipinas” also joined the country as it bade farewell to Pope Francis on Monday morning.

GMA Pinoy TV, the Network’s flagship international channel, aired the live coverage overseas through its carriers in the US, Canada, Middle East, North Africa and Asia-Pacific region.

The Network’s special coverage, available online via GMA News Online’s official papal visit microsite(gmanews.tv/popefrancis), was also a big hit with web users.

The microsite, with its liveblog, livestream, Pope Tracker, and the #BlessedByThePope section, consistently provided breaking stories and heart-warming human interest articles including that of the girl who managed to get a selfie with the Pope, the story of the father who lost a child due to an accident after the Tacloban mass, the girl who cried during the UST event, the image of the smiling Pope in the rain, and how almost everyone was moved to tears during the Tacloban mass.

Moreover, GMA News’ hashtag #BlessedByThePope became a top trending topic in the Philippines and was also one of the trending topics worldwide for two consecutive days.  GMA News Online was also able to get noteworthy user-generated content, both photos and videos, through YouScoop. And its “The Filipino faith is waterproof” photo was shared by thousands.

The Network’s flagship AM radio station DZBB 594 kHz Super Radyo, on the other hand, also had its “Si Pope Francis sa Pilipinas” special coverage.

Present at the contract-signing were GMA Senior Vice President for Entertainment Lilybeth G. Rasonable, GMA Senior Assistant Vice President for Alternative Productions Gigi Santiago-Lara and GMA Artist Center Assistant Vice President and Head for Talent Imaging and Marketing Unit Simoun Ferrer.

Chynna has been with Artist Center for 14 years now, and she is filled with gratitude and high spirits as she remains to be part of the GMA family. “Mahirap iwanan yung kung saan ka nagsimula nung bata ka pa. Yung ganong klaseng bonding, ganung klaseng pamilya [It is difficult to leave the place where you started from. That kind of bonding, that kind of family],” she shares.

New to the Artist Center family is Ervic who is very excited for his upcoming project, Kailan Ba Tama Ang Mali. During the contract signing, he expressed that he’s happy to sign up with GMAAC. “Kapuso talaga ako. I have no intention of going anywhere else but the best station, GMA Network].”

And LJ, who has also been a faithful Kapuso, treats GMA Network as her second home. “Ang sarap kasi siyempre, parang pamilya ko talaga ‘tong GMA. Feeling ko dito na ‘ko tatanda. Parang yung signing, celebration lang ng new chapter ulit ng career ko, ng relationship ko with the Network [It feels good, of course, because GMA is already like family to me. I think I will grow old here. This signing is a celebration of a new chapter in my career and with my relationship with the Network],” she reveals.

Lilybeth Rasonable feels happy for this set of artists who continues to improve their craft and build stronger ties with the network. She has high hopes and full support for the three Kapuso stars who signed with GMA.

“Ervic is just starting out. But we want to train him more, give him acting workshops, although he is doing very well. He’s very willing to attend the workshops so we want to do it for him so that he can be better at his craft,” confirms the GMA Executive.

“For Chynna and LJ, mga established actresses na ‘yan. They’ve proven themselves to be very good at what they do, so tuloy-tuloy lang ang support ng network at Artist Center sa kanila, para mas mag-grow pa sila sa kanilang career [For Chynna and LJ, they are already established actresses. They’ve proven themselves to be very good at what they do, so the Network and Artist Center will continue to support them so that their career will grow more],” she adds.

Philippines – GMA Network was recently at the heart of two of the Philippines’ biggest regional festivals, the Sinulog Festival in Cebu and Dinagyang Festival in Iloilo.

Before trooping to the streets of downtown Cebu City to witness the annual Sinulog Festival revelry, thousands of Cebuano Kapuso fans congregated in three of the city’s biggest malls to meet GMA’s premier artists led by Regine Velasquez-Alcasid and lead stars of drama series Healing Hearts, Second Chances and Once Upon a Kiss.

Regine was joined by Angelika de la Cruz, Joyce Ching and Kristoffer Martin, stars of the upcoming series Healing Hearts as they delivered outstanding performances before a delighted crowd.

Another set of Kapuso artists starred in back-to-back mall shows with the lead stars of the recently launched primetime series Second Chances—Jennylyn Mercado, Raymart Santiago, Camille Prats and Rafael Rosell—sharing the stage with the freshest love team of Miguel Tanfelix and Bianca Umali from the primetime series Once Upon a Kiss. Comedians Albert “Betong” Sumaya and Mike “Pekto” Nacua, who also star in the said series, added more fun to both shows.

Meanwhile, a delightful blend of feel-good shows and upbeat performances from GMA stars also spiced up this year’s Dinagyang Festival in Iloilo, the so-called City of Love.

This time, Once Upon A Kiss stars Miguel, Bianca, Pekto, and Betong once again ventured outside Manila to personally touch base with fans and went around from one stop to another via the Dinagyang Festival Corporate Parade.

Kapuso home-grown talent Ruru Madrid, who was a guest performer at the Iloilo Festival Queen and Hiyas Sang Iloilo beauty pageant served up a musical treat, which was very well received by a large audience.

Real-life sweethearts Lovi Poe and Rocco Nacino set the stage on fire as they regaled their supporters with a mesmerizing production number during a Kapuso Mall Show.

Moreover, Ang Lihim ni Annasandra’s Mikael Daez delivered a live coverage on the Ati Tribe Competition for GMA TV Western Visayas, to amuse the Ilonggo audience.

Furthermore, the lead stars of the newest GMA soap Kailan Ba Tama Ang Mali?—Geoff Eigenmann, Empress Schuck, Dion Ignacio, and Max Collins—drew in their share of huge followers during a Kapuso Mall Show in the region.

Geoff, Empress, and Dion, meanwhile, proceeded to the Freedom Grandstand right after the mall show to take part in the Dinagyang Festival Awarding Ceremonies.

In endeavoring to be one at heart with its viewers, GMA Network continues to celebrate the many customs and traditions that make up a truly unique Pinoy culture.

It is certainly a love-filled February for Love Marie Ongpauco, more popularly known as Heart Evangelista.

On February 15, the day after the Startalk host’s birthday on Valentine’s Day, she will wed Philippine Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero at Balesin Island Club, a picturesque private resort off the Eastern coast of Luzon.

Chiz proposed to Heart with a heart-shaped heirloom ring in front of his family and their close friends in his hometown of Sorsogon in August last year.

The couple has since been busy with wedding preparations for a small, private ceremony taking place in Balesin followed by a bigger reception in Manila.

The blushing bride-to-be has been documenting their wedding journey on her Instagram account @iamhearte, counting down the days with the hashtags #144daystoahappyheart and #ChizHeart21515.

Heart’s gown at the Balesin ceremony will be created especially for her by Dubai-based designer Ezra Santos, while she will be wearing a dress from world-renowned designer Monique Lhuillier at the Manila reception and a Mark Bumgarner creation for the after party.

Her 15 bridesmaids consists of her closest friends from high school as well as those in show business, including Kapuso actresses Carla Abellana, Jennylyn Mercado, Lovi Poe, Solenn Heussaff and Alessandra de Rossi.

Their upcoming wedding is certainly the highlight of a very fruitful journey for Heart who has celebrated a lot of milestones in the past year including three successful solo art exhibits locally and abroad, but it is also just the beginning of the Kapuso star’s journey to “forever.”

As one of GMA Network’s brightest stars, Heart is a regular on the variety show Sunday All Stars and co-hosts Startalk, the longest-running showbiz-oriented talk show which air on GMA’s flagship international channel GMA Pinoy TV. She is also the host of Weddings TV, a show that offers wedding tips and ideas for brides-to-be on GMA Life TV, the second international channel of GMA Network.

This February, the station with a heart continues to make a difference in the lives of Filipinos with the annual Kapuso Bloodletting Day held in key areas across the Philippines.

Now on its 7th year, the Kapuso Bloodletting Day is a project of GMA Network’s Corporate Affairs Division in cooperation with the Network’s socio-civic arm, GMA Kapuso Foundation and GMA Regional TV, in partnership with the Philippine Red Cross.

The event, which encouraged the entire Kapuso workforce to take part in saving lives by donating blood, was held last February 11 at GMA Network Center in Quezon City. The whole day affair saw employees, officers, artists and even their family and friends taking time out from their daily work activities to participate in the worthy cause.

The initiative was also extended nationwide with bloodletting drives held in the regions, namely, Ilocos, Dagupan, Bicol, Cebu, Iloilo, Bacolod, Cagayan de Oro, Davao and GenSan, on February 14.

The Kapuso Bloodletting Day yielded a total of 1, 783 blood bags (799, 550 cc) with the event in Quezon City producing 333 blood bags (147, 050 cc) and the regional bloodletting drives producing 1, 450 blood bags (652, 500 cc).

“This event was a success, not only because the donations this year surpassed the prior year but also because this huge turnout and continued support is a testament to our solidarity with the Network’s commitment to uplift the lives of our fellow Filipinos,” says GMA Kapuso Foundation EVP and COO Mel C. Tiangco.

“None of this would be possible without the generosity and bravery of each Kapuso donor who believe in and donated to our cause,” she furthers.

GMA Corporate Affairs AVP Teresa L. Pacis, meanwhile, says this activity is a concrete means by which employees can engage in the Network’s corporate social responsibility efforts. “The annual bloodletting program is an integral part of our CSR platform. We look after the welfare of our employees by encouraging them to mine the health benefits of donating blood. At the same time, we get our employees to actively take part in enriching the lives of our fellow Filipinos.”

Eight entries from GMA Network were named as finalists – the most number of finalists among all local TV networks – in the highly esteemed 2015 New York Festivals World’s Best TV and Films competition.

Top-rating weekend news magazine program Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho was shortlisted in the Human Interest category for its episode “From Saudi with Love.” A heartwarming story about gratitude that crosses borders, defies language barriers, religion and ethnicity, the episode featured Saudi journalist Rawan Radwan’s search for her former Pinay nanny.

Chosen as one of the finalists in the Community Portraits category was afternoon program Reporter’s Notebook for its “Burak at Pangarap” episode. It centered on the story of twelve-year-old Junjun, one of the 78,000 children in Metro Manila facing severe deprivation of shelter, after his family was left homeless when a fire razed their home and more than a hundred other houses in Malabon City.

Late-night documentary program Front Row, in turn, made it as a finalist in the Best Public Affairs Program category for its feature on the neurodegenerative disease Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Titled “ALS,” the documentary took viewers beyond the viral Ice Bucket Challenge and showed the real story behind the disease in the eyes of the patients and their families.

Katipunan, GMA Network’s first historical mini-series, earned a finalist status for its premiere episode “Teresa” under the Best Camerawork category. Produced by GMA News and Public Affairs, Katipunan shed light on the real Andres Bonifacio and the men and women who started the revolution.

Meanwhile, nominated in the Biography/Profiles category was GMA News TV’s weekend documentary program Reel Time featuring “Dungkoy,” a ten-year-old boy from Calauan, Laguna, who was abandoned by his parents and was left alone to take care of his paralyzed grandmother.

Travel documentary program Motorcycle Diaries’ “Karapatan ng Bata” episode, also on GMA News TV, was named as a finalist in the Human Concerns category. The episode showed how poverty denies countless Filipino children their basic rights through the eyes of several less fortunate children in the country.

“Walang Rape sa Bontok,” one of the winning entries in the first Cine Totoo Philippine Documentary Festival produced by GMA News TV, was listed as a finalist in the Film/Documentaries category. The documentary by Carla Samantha Ocampo tells the story of two Filipinas, both victims of sexual abuse, who yearn for a utopia where women can live without being sexually violated.

Further, GMA News TV’s “May Pag-asa” station ID, a collection of stories of hope that aims to show the power of the human heart to see light in the midst of darkness, was chosen as one of the finalists in the Station/Image Promotion category.

All finalists will proceed to a second round of judging by award-winning industry experts from around the globe. Winners will be presented at the 2015 Television and Film Awards Ceremony scheduled on April 14in Las Vegas.

Kapuso Primetime King Dingdong Dantes takes on a role he has never done before in GMA’s newest inspirational drama series entitled Pari Koy.

Dingdong, one of the country’s most sought-after leading men who is blessed not just with bountiful talents but also with the heart for pursuing his many advocacies, will portray the role of Father Kokoy Evangelista.

Aside from having the complete package of good looks, humor, warmth, and wisdom, Father Kokoy is also admired for his virtuous principles in life. A go-to person in times of problems, Kokoy is the kind of friend who unconditionally offers a shoulder to lean on. He is the ideal guy, a Mr. Right, and the man any woman would like to introduce to her parents. But here’s the catch: Kokoy is a priest.

Father Kokoy, better known as Pari Koy, is a priest who is known for his non-traditional and non-conformist ways of bringing people closer to God, doing whatever it takes to show that it is cool to believe. But his own faith will be put to the test when he is assigned in the parish of Barangay Pinagpala and starts to deal with the people of the community.

Set in a contemporary barangay, stellar performances will be delivered by some of the country’s respected and talented artists including Sunshine Dizon as Noemi, the secretary of the parish in Pinagpala who remains to be optimistic despite being maltreated by her husband; Chanda Romero as Martha, the self-righteous leader of the lay workers in the parish of Pinagpala who is against the unconventional ways of Father Kokoy; Luz Valdez as Esther, one of the lay workers in the parish who loves to talk about gossips and rumors; and Dexter Doria as Salome, also a lay worker who loyally serves in the parish despite being teased by Martha and Esther.

Father Kokoy will also be challenged to put his faith into action as he meets the people of Barangay Pinagpala – with Gabby Eigenmann as Jude, the influential and corrupt chairman of Barangay Pinagpala; Rap Fernandez as Sol, the right-hand person of Jude, who helps him with his illegal schemes; JC Tiuseco as Timo, the irresponsible brother of Noemi; and Carlo Gonzales as Simon, the abusive husband of Noemi who fails to provide for his family.

Completing the cast are GMA Artist Center’s homegrown talents led by Jillian Ward as Sarah, the loving daughter of Noemi; Jeric Gonzales as Eli, the son of Salome who thinks that going to the parish is uncool; Lindsay De Vera as Ava, the charming grandchild of Martha who will fall in love with Eli; Hiro Peralta as Sam, the closet homosexual brother of Father Kokoy; and David Remo as Pinggoy, the high-spirited “village’s son” of Barangay Pinagpala.

How will Father Kokoy bring the people of Barangay Pinagpala closer to God? Will he be successful in instigating change in the community? Or will his faith and perspectives in life be moved by the people around him?

At the helm of this primetime series is the award-winning director Maryo J. Delos Reyes. After the successful run of the primetime series Niño, GMA takes pride in having him as the director of Pari Koy as he is known not only for tackling social relevance but for uplifting the human spirit and evoking hope through his masterpieces.

Pari Koy begins airing on March 10 on GMA Network’s flagship international channel, GMA Pinoy TV.

Megan also talked about her relationship with fellow artists and staff, and how she misses most of those who have supported her from the start of her career. She also mentioned that she wants to go back to acting, “Namiss ko rin ang pag-act, kasi sa Miss World, hindi ka naman nag-a-act doon. GMA Network’s The Half Sisters is undoubtedly the number one daytime drama show in the Philippines as the series continues its phenomenal ratings success, according to data from the industry’s widely trusted ratings service provider Nielsen TV Audience Measurement.

Based on National Urban Philippines data for March 1-31 (March 22-31 based on overnight data), The Half Sisters registered a household rating of 17.6 percent, leading ABS-CBN’s Flordeliza’s 10.3 percent by 7.3 points.

In Urban Luzon, which comprises 77 percent of the total urban TV households nationwide, The Half Sisters posted 19.9 percent household ratings, 11 points higher than Flordeliza’s 8.9 percent.

The Afternoon Prime series likewise led in Mega Manila, which represents 59 percent of the total urban TV households in the country, with 21.1 percent household ratings, leading Flordeliza’s 7.9 percent by 13.2 points.

Avid viewers of The Half Sisters will have more reason to stay glued to their favorite drama series as it will now air up to June this year with more plot twists to be revealed in the succeeding episodes.

The Half Sisters explores the phenomenon of hetero-paternal superfecundation, which is the successive fertilization of two or more ova from the same ovulation cycle by different sires. This is made possible by separate successive acts of sexual intercourse resulting to one woman bearing “twins” with different fathers.

This controversial soap opera stars Kapuso teen actresses Barbie Forteza as the kind, diligent and obedient Diana Alcantara, and Thea Tolentino as the spoiled, conceited and manipulative Ashley Alcantara.

The cast is also composed of Derrick Monasterio and Andre Paras, together with Ms. Gloria Romero, Jean Garcia, Eula Valdez, Jomari Yllana, Mel Martinez, and Ryan Eigenmann. All of them could not be any happier as they continue to reap praises from viewers and positive feedbacks from netizens for their great performances.

Expect more revelations and twists as the drama continues in The Half Sisters, directed by Mark Reyes, weekdays after Eat Bulaga on GMA Afternoon Prime.

GMAKF’s Operation Bayanihan team handed out relief goods to over 20, 000 individuals in the conflict-stricken area of Maguindanao.

GMA Kapuso Foundation, GMA Network’s socio-civic arm, recently rolled out its Operation Bayanihan program in Maguindanao, effectively serving 5,000 families affected by the ongoing armed conflict.

In partnership with Solid Shipping Lines, ARMM Heart, Department of Health-ARMM, and Department of Public Works and Highways-ARMM, the Kapuso Foundation team handed out relief goods consisting of rice, noodles and canned goods.

GMAKF was among the first to provide relief operations in Maguindanao. In Mamasapano, relief goods were distributed to 3,320 families. Meanwhile, 621 families in Sharif Saydona and 1,059 families in Sharif Aguak also received support from the foundation.

GMAKF’s team had to travel for seven hours from General Santos City to Cotabato just to reach the communities affected by the conflict in Maguindanao. Didith Nucum, GMAKF relief operations project staff, said they were stopped several times by armed men.

“We talked to them and explained our intentions. We had to rush every now and then for our safety. It wasn’t easy but what pushed us to keep moving were the people waiting for us who needed our help,” says Nucum.

When the team finally reached the evacuation center, all of the fear they experienced on the road banished.

“The people greeted us with a smile and it was priceless. We could never imagine how they can still manage to smile knowing that a few kilometers from them, a war is going on,” recalls Nucum.

“While we continue praying for the stability of our country and the safety of its people, the Foundation is also working to create a concrete and positive impact in the lives of our fellowmen,” says GMA Kapuso Foundation EVP and COO Mel C. Tiangco. “They can rest assured knowing that, wherever there is a Filipino in need, the Foundation will also be there, because that’s what bayanihan and being a Kapuso is all about.”

Thirty nine years on the air and counting, the Philippines’ longest running public service program Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko (KKMK) shows no signs of slowing down as it remains committed to its mission of improving the welfare of indigent Filipinos across the country, especially children afflicted with cancer.

Since 1975, the program has served as a bridge between patients in need of financial assistance and the generous donors who wish to make a difference in other people’s lives. Subsequently, the Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko Foundation, Inc. was established to further the program’s dedication to public service.

With KKMK Foundation President Dr. Orly Mercado and KKMK Foundation, Inc. Board Director Connie Angeles, who also serve as the program’s hosts, the Foundation continues to promote its health advocacies and extend medical assistance to Filipinos.

In 2014, the Foundation came to the aid of residents affected by the earthquake in Bohol through a medical mission conducted in the area. Along with partners in the private sector, KKMK also took part in the restoration of the Tacloban City Hospital which was turned over to the local government in August of that year.

Continuing its advocacy of raising the standards of public health, the Foundation also conducted 118 medical missions nationwide, which benefited a total of 105,936 patients last year. With the help of the private sector, other non-government organizations and the local government units, KKMK was able to provide free check-ups and laboratory procedures to the beneficiaries.

Also in the same year, Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko’s long-standing project “Batang Kapwa” or “Batang K” saw 13 of its beneficiaries graduate from the program. “Batang K” helps children afflicted with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) and their families find financial assistance for the patient’s chemotherapy. The program also boosts the children’s morale through support group activities.

Moreover, the Foundation has heeded the call of over 800 patients who came to their office in the form of medicines and financial assistance for laboratory procedures and surgical needs, while 592 patients were referred to hospitals and medical institutions.

With 39 years of unwavering commitment to public service to its name, Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko moves closer towards its vision of raising the quality of life of Filipinos in need.

GMA News and Public Affairs proudly presents Karelasyon—the newest drama anthology set to reveal the real nature of relationships based on true-to-life experiences of people who have faced different ordeals in the hopes of keeping the love of their lives.

What sets Karelasyon apart from programs of the same genre is that it underscores the fact that with every relationship comes pain, sacrifice, and grief; and that loving someone does not always guarantee a ticket to a happy ending.

The drama anthology will premiere worldwide on GMA Network’s flagship international channel GMA Pinoy TV on April 19, Sunday.

For its pilot episode, Karelasyon features the story of “Minda,” portrayed by Mylene Dizon: a woman who, in her desperation to be with someone, easily falls for “Daniel,” played by Mark Herras. An account of heartache and betrayal, witness how the man Minda loves instantly turns into her worst nightmare once her gay son “Ryan” (Martin del Rosario) enters the picture.

Written and directed by acclaimed independent film director Adolf Alix, Jr., Karelasyon is hosted by no less than Kapuso premier leading lady and TV host Carla Abellana. Take a closer look at love and relationships this Sunday, on GMA Pinoy TV.

Show business may seem to be all about glitz and glamour. But what is often unknown to many is that life in the showbiz industry is tough. The long work hours, sometimes crazy schedule, and the hard work needed to pull off a good performance can really take up an artist’s time and energy.

However, despite the demands of the industry, a number of GMA Artist Center stars still manage to prioritize their education. Meet these Kapuso artists who recently celebrated their graduation, and get to know their thoughts on how taking the extra mile to finish school while juggling with work is worth it.

For teen idol Ruru Madrid, he considers education as the primary thing he should be focusing on. He devotes his time on studying, and it helps him develop a sense of self-discipline. This has become useful to him at work since he knows how to manage his time wisely. He shares, “Para ka ring nag-aaral kasi ‘pag nasa work.  You have to memorize your lines and dapat maintindihan mo talaga yung instructions and yung gusto ninyong ma-achieve sa eksena.  In a way, may similarity yung discipline ng acting and studying.”

School also taught Ruru a sense of achievement. He believes that dreams can only be achieved if one works hard for it. “Lahat naman siguro kami ito ang pangarap, yung pumasa at maka-graduate. Pero hindi mo makukuha ‘yun ng basta-basta. Kaya ang sarap pala ng feeling na nakamit mo yung goal mo sa buhay because of hard work and perseverance.  It makes your achievement sweeter kasi alam mong pinaghirapan mo.  Kaya, ito rin yung gagamitin kong motivation sa work ko as an artist.  I really have to work hard and develop my craft para maging isang mahusay na actor.”

Ruru’s on-screen partner Gabbi Garcia also finished high school recently. Gabbi, who has been a consistent member of her school’s student council, wants to continue with her studies and to fulfil her dream of being a pilot.

She admits that time management can be a bit challenging for her, but her parents are always there to guide her.  She shares how they appreciate all of her achievements and at the same time, keep her feet on the ground, and she wants to impart something with her fellow celebrities who are studying and working at the same time.

“I was taught that it is important to respect each and every one, as well as to be God-fearing. Being in the industry isn’t forever. Iba pa rin ‘pag nakapag-aral. If you really want to study while working, there will always be a way. You just have to be focused and determined in reaching your goal, and that is to graduate,” affirms the Kapuso actress.

Miguel Tanfelix, who also finished high school this year, shares his secret in maintaining balance between work and school.

“You have to plan your schedule for the week para alam mo kung kelan ka nasa work at ano yung time mo para mag-aral.  Marami ka ring sacrifice na dapat gawin. Walang imposible pag ginusto mo, so you got to have to the right motivation to make it work.  Pag nasa taping naman ako, I focus myself dun sa mga eksena ko and the way I act.  I guess the key is, you have to focus on what you do,” the Kapuso actor recommends.

It is a big help for Miguel that he didn’t get special treatment in school. He takes pride in having a normal life in school, and he feels glad to have a set of friends who supports him in both school work and celebrity-related commitments. He claims that having this set-up in school taught him how to deal with different people and develop self-discipline.

Both Derrick Monasterio and Miggy Jimenez take their modules to work as they study in between takes. And their hard work finally paid off as they are now ready to take the next step.

Derrick is planning to take up Law at San Beda College. And since he is busy with work, he knows that this will not be easy, “Nothing worth having comes easy, so if you want to achieve something, you have to work hard for it.”

Miggy, who was recognized in school as the most talented and most behaved, believes that celebrities should still know the value of education. “This is something you cannot exchange for anything, and you should never give up on your dreams. Strive hard so you can make it,” the teen actor shares.

Renz Valerio did not only graduate, he was even given a special academic citation and academic excellence awards. On learning one significant lesson from school, he shares that it is only ourselves who can lead our way to success. He claims, “Success starts with you. I had to struggle my way to finishing high school because there were lots of trials, but I am thankful to have had them because they have given me the opportunity to know who my true friends are. It revealed people who will always be there for me, such as my family. With these challenges, I managed to strive harder and finish high school with flying colors.”

Renz also shares that priorities should be well thought of, and education should always be on top of the list, “While your career may be something great, education will always be the greatest thing you will ever have. Always remember to have faith in yourself, because no one else will make the move for you. Lastly, have faith in God, because He always got good plans for each of us. It is just up to us on how we will reach the finish line.”

Finally, Charee Pineda shares her joy and pride after finishing her bachelor’s degree in Political Science. Aside from several showbiz commitments, Charee keeps herself busy in public service as she is currently a councilor in Valenzuela City.

For the Kapuso actress, being able to finish college amidst work difficulties is already an achievement and considers herself lucky to have supportive people in her life. “Communicating well and having an efficient support system, which are my family and staff, were and will always be best for me in dealing with work and school,” Charee closes.

The importance that these Kapuso artists give to having a good education serves as a much needed breath of fresh air to the industry. May they serve as an inspiration not only to their fellow celebrities but also to the rest of the young people to always keep their eyes on the prize.
